What Luxembourg people call “the Little Switzerland of Luxembourg” – or “Mullerthal”, is a small area close to the German border and Echternach, the oldest town in the country. Even if the area only covers less than 7% of the Luxembourg territory, its name come from its hilly landscapes covered by forests and meadows, which significantly reminds Switzerland. Excepting that, this time, pastures and cheeses are missing!

As Switzerland, the Mullerthal area is crossed by hiking trails, leading to the most famous spots of the area. From the Beaufort castle to the Schéissendëmpel waterfall, from Echternach to Kallektuffquell, the enchanting places are many.

During autumn, the bright green of the pines contrasts with orange and red leaves of the other trees. Rocked by the noise of the water flowing down, the scene calls to mind the land of Hobbits in the Lord of Rings.

  • Hike W6: The Schéissendëmpel hike, in Waldbillig (5,2km).

The hike starts on the parking …, in the little village of Mullterthal (Waldbillig county). The path follows a stream, leading to the Schéissendëmpel waterfall.

Frodon himself wouldn’t have dreamed of a better place 🙂

The hike is easy without too much altitude difference all along, and is a good compromise between single tracks and large paths, between forests and viewpoints.

The Mullerthal hike is to-do in case you want to have an idea of what Little Switzerland really is about.

PS: My friend and favorite photographer Analia recently took a some pictures from Little Switzerland ! Her website takes you on a journey on several places all over the world ! I highly recommend you to stop by on Escape Photo for a moment. One great picture from her for motivation 😉
